This same structural logic applies to cable news: corporations don’t care which political identity sells to their target demographic. They care that both sides are dependent on their advertising dollars.


The Cable News Revenue Landscape

Cable news remains a $3.6 billion segment of a $20.2 billion cable TV market in steep decline. Within that market, cable news has proven more resilient than entertainment cable — primarily because live-news viewership resists time-shifting.

More recent iSpot.tv data shows pharma impressions surging across all networks simultaneously in February 2025 versus prior year: Fox News +63%, CNN +46.8%, MSNBC +32.3%. The Rachel Maddow Show saw pharma impressions increase elevenfold when Maddow returned to weeknights in early 2025.

Contradiction

The more significant form of defense contractor influence on news media is not advertising but the practice of hiring retired military officers as paid television analysts — who simultaneously hold lucrative positions at defense contractors, without disclosing those ties on air.

Jack Keane, Fox News’s “senior strategic analyst,” sat on General Dynamics’ Board of Directors from 2004 to at least 2018, earning $257,884+ annually — while making dozens of Fox News appearances advocating for increased defense spending on ships, tanks, and vehicles built by General Dynamics, without disclosure. He also served as Executive Chairman of AM General from 2016 onward (which received a $459 million contract in 2017 for Humvees for Afghanistan) while appearing on Fox News at least 33 times in the first two weeks after the Afghanistan withdrawal, without any disclosure.

The pattern extends across networks. Jeh Johnson — former Homeland Security Secretary — appeared on CNN endorsing the ongoing Gaza war while sitting on Lockheed Martin’s Board of Directors (joined December 2017, $325,000 annually), with no disclosure. Stephen Hadley appeared on Fox News without disclosing his Raytheon board seat (2009–2020). The documented cases span Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and NBC. The undisclosed defense contractor–media pundit relationship is bipartisan by design. A third channel operates through think tanks. A Quincy Institute/FAIR study of 11 months of Ukraine war coverage found that of the 15 most-cited think tanks, only Human Rights Watch does not take funding from Pentagon contractors. Media were seven times more likely to cite think tanks with defense contractor ties than those without.
